About Etymolog
Etymolog connects the origins of names and surnames with historical records, folk traditions and literature. We begin in the Czech lands and gradually open the archive to more languages and regions.
We distinguish documented etymology, scholarly hypotheses, historical records and narratives. Legends, mythology, traditions and weather lore come only from traceable sources; AI does not invent their content. We show the origin and available authorship and license information for each sourced text.
An identical surname does not necessarily mean a shared family or a single origin. We report clerical changes only when supported by a specific record. Counts belong to a particular place, period and measure. Automated imports undergo editorial review before publication.
